Property Fraud

Property fraud encompasses a wide range of frauds, from falsifying documents relating to property in order to (for example) obtain credit, to physically taking over and occupying a property for some criminal purpose.

A common type of property fraud involves identifying vacant properties (for example where the owner has died or been moved into a nursing home or sheltered accommodation) and purporting to sell them to a victim. By the time the true owner realises what has happened, the fraudster will have absconded with the money paid for the property, and the victim will be left without the money he paid, and without any interest in the property.

Frauds of this type often require complicity from a number of parties. As a result, they are often linked to other forms of offending used to secure such complicity – for example drugs offences to raise the cash required to pay bribes, or kidnap/blackmail to induce cooperation through fear or threats.
